Preimplantation genetic diagnostics (PGD)
This is a recently introduced technique that focuses on a genetic examination of an embryo prior to its transfer into the uterus. As a matter of fact, this technigue is a diagnostic test for elimination of known genetic disorders or chromozome abnormalities. This examination is perfomed after a micromanipulation retrieval of one or two cells from an embryo in eight-cell-stage. These cells are subsequently genetically examined.
The embryo is not damaged through this intervention because every cell in this stage is capable of independent development. The most frequent indications for the preimplantation genetic diagnostics are chromozome disorder by a parent, birth of a child with an inborn development defect, the patient´s higher age, unsuccessful previous IVF cycles, repeated misscarriages etc.
